P-CCS Superintendent Monica Merritt Receives Safe Schools Leadership Award from the NASRO

Monica LMerritt, Superintendent of Plymouth-Canton Community Schools, was awarded with the 2019 Chief Nicholas C. Derzis Safe Schools Leadership Award from the National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO) on Monday, June 24.
This prestigious award was presented to Superintendent Merritt at NASRO’s 29th Annual School Safety Conference, held in Pigeon Forge, TN. The Safe School Leadership Award is presented to those individuals who are willing to support and further develop their School Resource Officer partnership, exemplify leadership, innovation, dedication and proactive measures to enhance the safety of their school community.
Merritt was hired as the district’s Superintendent on July 1, 2016. She immediately assumed a proactive leadership role toward improving upon the district’s partnership with law enforcement. She recognized potential vulnerabilities that existed in the district, and began enhancing security infrastructure and providing extensive training for students and staff at all levels.
“Superintendent Merritt’s comprehensive approach to school safety provides the district with the foundation and building blocks necessary to enhance and sustain a safe and positive learning environment,” said Canton Public Safety Director Joshua Meier. “Our Public Safety Department is grateful for her leadership, knowledge and expertise when addressing the safety and well-being of the students and staff of the Plymouth-Canton Community Schools,” Meier added.
The Plymouth-Canton Community School District covers 3 communities, consisting of more than 17,000 students attending class in 24 school buildings—including three high schools located on the Plymouth-Canton Educational Park campus.
