STUDENT ARRIVAL & DISMISSAL TIMES

Students should be in their classroom and ready to begin their day at 8:50 am
- Dismissal is at 3:55 pm. (Half-day dismissal is at 12:00 Noon)
All students are to arrive for morning classes between 8:35-8:40 AM. The limited number of entrances for the school mean that each class will have a designated place to line up each morning before school indicated by their class number painted on the blacktop or sidewalk near the door they are to enter in the morning.
An emergency card for each child must be on file in the office. In addition to your home phone number, please list all work, pager/beeper and cell phone numbers we might need. Also, please provide numbers for relatives, neighbors and friends that would be available to pick up your child in the event of illness, accident or an emergency school closing. Please notify the office if you have any corrections, additions or deletions to this card during the school year.
We welcome visitors and ask that you sign in at the office when you arrive. This allows us to know who is in the building and allows us to locate the person in the event of a question, phone call, etc. If you would like to observe in your child’s classroom, it is necessary to make an appointment in advance.
DROPPING OFF AND PICKING UP CHILDREN
- The large traffic loop near the school’s front entrance is for buses only. Please do not use this large loop, the one by the electronic school sign, if you are dropping off or picking up.
- The parent drop off and pick-up loop can be accessed off Cherry Hill Road. While you may wait in your car here at dismissal, please do not park either in the morning or in the afternoon. Parked cars will quickly cause a traffic snarl. Parking for staff is on the south side of the building as well and shares the driveway off Cherry Hill. Please do not park in this area or travel through it to pick up or drop off by the dumpster.
- There is parking for parents on the west side of the building off Denton Road. It can be accessed using the driveway nearest the fire station. This is the best place to pick up your child after school. It is also the traffic area closest to the Kindergarten and first grade classrooms. To avoid most school traffic altogether, you might want to consider picking up or dropping off in the subdivision just east of school. There is a sidewalk from this subdivision that leads to the back of the school.
PICKING UP CHILDREN DURING SCHOOL HOURS
Parents or guardians are required to come to the office to pick up their child from school. Unless we have been contacted in advance, a child will only be released to the people listed on the child’s emergency card. Identification for the person picking up a child may be required.
When it becomes necessary for a child to go home due to illness or injury, a parent or guardian will be called. If they cannot be reached, a person designated on the child’s emergency card will be contacted.
It is helpful to teaches if parents can notify the teacher of any pre-arranged appointments that will require their child to leave school during the regular school day. When a student is leaving school early, the person picking up the student must first report to the office to sign the student out. Parents should allow enough time to sign the student out, AND then pick up the child from their class. The office will not call children down early to wait for parents to arrive. Likewise, when returning to school in the middle of the school day, students should be signed in at the office.
SNACKS, LUNCHES, AND FOOD ALLERGIES
We have students attending our school who have a life threatening allergy to nuts, peanuts, and peanut products. These children may not eat, touch, or in some cases even inhale the aroma of peanuts without endangering themselves. While we have arranged proper precautions at school for the safety of these children, we also need your help in preventing a possible problem for one of these children. We realize that peanut butter is a staple in the lives of many children and peanut products (e.g. peanut oil) are present in many snack foods and ask that you help us by taking the following precautions:
- If you send a peanut butter sandwich, please wrap the sandwich in a zip lock bag, place it in a lunch bag or box and remind your child that it should only be eaten in the cafeteria, not on the way to school or in the classroom.
- Classroom snacks are limited to fruits or vegetables. This may include canned varieties and applesauce.
- Each individual teacher has established his or her own preferences for celebrating student birthdays and holidays. Some may ask parents to send in a classroom book, for instance, instead a food birthday treat. Some will allow only specific types of foods for birthdays or holidays. It is important to follow these teacher preferences when planning for how to help your child celebrate his or her birthday at school.
State of Michigan law requires elementary students to attend school on a regular basis. Regular attendance is essential fo students to make good academic progress. While students are granted “excused” absences for appointments, it is better if those are scheduled outside of the school day. Please contact the school office absence line by 9:00 AM on the day(s) your child will be absent. Call 734-582-6700 and press the number “2” to report your child’s absence. If your child is not in attendance and the school has not received notification, an attempt will be made to contact you for safety purposes. Parents will be contacted if children are excessively absent or tardy by the school principal or by the school district attendance officer. Excessive absences may be referred to the court system if other efforts are not successful at getting students to attend regularly.
VACATION DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR
While we would rather parents not take children out of school for vacations or holidays, we realize that there are times this needs to happen for families. We ask that you provide a letter telling us that you are leaving for a family vacation or holiday. Please include the day your child will be leaving and the day you expect he or she will return. This letter will be included in your child’s record of school attendance for the year. During the time your child is gone, we will not be providing schoolwork he or she can do during this time. It is important to realize that most of what your child would be working on at school cannot be sent with him or her and cannot be done when they return. Most of what the children learn at school happens when the teacher is providing instruction and students are responding to the lessons through active participation. Your child’s teacher can provide suggestions for learning activities your child can do while he or she is away from school.
Procedures are in place to provide for the safety of children in a variety of emergency situations. These include fire, weather emergencies, lock downs, and evacuations. Each class is assigned a specific location to go to in the event of a fire in the school or a serious weather situation, like a tornado. Practices are scheduled with students so they know where to go and how to behave should an emergency arise. Communications plans are in place for school staff, with the Canton Police and Fire Departments, and for contacting parents during the school day, if necessary.
INCLEMENT WEATHER/CLOSING SCHOOLS AND RECESS
In the event of bad weather or other emergencies, the Superintendent of Schools may make the decision to close the Plymouth-Canton Schools. Radio stations WJR, WXYZ, and WWJ will announce school closings. Please check one of these stations before calling the school. You will not receive a call from school about a closing unless it affects Workman School only. Students are expected to attend school unless an official announcement is made. Children will not be sent home early during the school day unless each parent is notified. Children will have outdoor recess each day in the winter if the temperature, with wind chill, is 10° F or above. Children need to wear boots each day to be allowed off the playground blacktop when snow is on the ground. Schools also want to keep to a minimum the number of calls the office must make to homes for dry clothing. Upon returning to school after an illness, with a parent note, a child will be allowed to stay inside at recess for ONE DAY ONLY. Only a doctor’s note will allow them to stay in longer.
STUDENT PROBLEM SOLVING SKILLS
One goal we have for our students is to help them learn the language and skills to resolve some of the problems they encounter during the school day. While we would expect students to ask for adult help in situations involving their safety or other serious situations, most conflicts between friends can be solved by the children themselves. These are the steps we are teaching Workman students to follow when they have a problem:
- Ignore (If that doesn’t work…)
- Move away (If that doesn’t work…)
- Talk friendly (Use an “I” message, like “I want you to stop that.” or “I don’t like being treated that way.”) (If that doesn’t work…)
- Talk firmly (If that doesn’t work…)
- Get adult help
We would appreciate you reinforcing the use of these steps when your child comes home and tells you about a problem with a classmate at school. Don’t hesitate to call us if something is happening at school that you think requires our intervention.
PROBLEM SOLVING PROCEDURES
Many times you have questions and concerns relating to school and you wonder with whom you should talk. Do you talk to the teacher or the principal? Do you complain about the bus stop to the school secretary or to a person in transportation? Here are some key ideas for facilitating communication with your school.
- Talk to the person closest to the problem first, (i.e., if it is a classroom problem, talk to the teacher).
- If for any reason you do not think the problem is “solved” with your initial contact, try again. If still not
satisfied, contact other sources in this order: the Building Administration, then the District Administration.
- Remember that the school secretaries and office aides cannot change policies and cannot usually solve
- Deal with a problem as soon as you are reasonably sure there is one.
- Call and make an appointment. Please don’t stop the teacher in the hall or just arrive at the classroom and ask to speak with the teacher about your concern.
COMMUNICATION WITH PARENTS
Parents can receive information from the school in a variety of ways. Teachers send home newsletters regularly with information about classroom activities and learning emphases. All teachers have email addresses that allow for easier communication with parents. The school newsletter is sent home during the third week of the month. All newsletters and lots of information about the school is available on the school website. Also, parents can subscribe to an e-bulletin service provided by the school. This e-bulletin contains information about upcoming events and is sent each Friday during the school year. Do not ever hesitate to call school if you have a question regarding your child or a school policy.
Clothing: We recommend that all clothes and school supplies be plainly marked with the student’s name. A “Lost and Found” is located near the east entrance of the school.
- Toys: Toys may only be brought in on designated “show and tell” days. Toys at school are usually a distraction from learning for students.
- Other Items: Students are also cautioned about bringing valuables to school. I-Pods and handheld electronic devices should not be brought to school. We recognize that parents may want their children to carry a cell phone with them for safety or some other reason, but we require that all calls to parents be made from the school office.
It is important for children to dress so they are comfortable at school. In winter, children need to come dressed to go outside including something to cover the legs, warm coats, hats and mittens or gloves. School district policy has classroom temperatures set at 68° during the winter months so please be sure you child is dressed to be warm enough at this temperature during the school day.
In warm weather, shorts must be an appropriate length (at least part way down the thigh). No half-shirts or bare midriffs are allowed. Tops with spaghetti straps may be worn only if another top is worn over or under them. Children who wear shirts or hats with inappropriate language or pictures on them will be required to change. Clothing that advertises drugs or alcohol does not belong where we are teaching children not to use these substances.
LUNCH PROGRAM AND SCHEDULE
Hot lunches are available for $2.75 each day. Several choices are available to students each day. The calendar is also available on the District website or in the school office or cafeteria. Student lunches may be prepaid through the school Cafeteria Manager. Weekly/monthly fees can be paid by cash or check made out to the PCCS Cafeteria Fund. Whole milk, 1% white or 1% chocolate milk is also available for $.50 for those children who bring lunch from home. Cookies, fruit roll-ups and frozen treats are also available a-la-carte. Breakfast is also available daily for $1.50.
LUNCH / RECESS SCHEDULE
- Kindergarten: EATS 12:10 to approx. 12:30; Recess follows until 1:00
- 1st Grade - EATS 11:45 to approx. 12:05; Recess follows until 12:35
- 2nd Grade - EATS 11:55 to approx. 12:15; then recess until 12:45
- 3rd Grade: EATS 12:20 to approx. 12:40; recess follows until 1:10
- 4th Grade: Recess from 12:05-12:35; followed by lunch until 12:55
- 5th Grade: Recess from 11:50 until 12:20; followed by lunch until 12:40
No lunch will be served on school half-days.
Adequate time is allocated for students to eat lunch, however if a child is not finished when the safety is ready
to take students to recess, the child may remain until they finish. While eating lunch, students are expected to use
courteous table manners and follow proper lunchroom procedures. Parents are welcome to dine with their
students periodically if they choose.
- Use the same behavior in the lunchroom that you would use at a restaurant.
- Students are responsible for disposing of all food, paper, plastic bags, and trays before leaving the lunchroom.
- Students must wait in the cafeteria until they are dismissed by an adult or by a safety.
STUDENT BEHAVIORAL EXPECTATIONS
The Plymouth-Canton School District believes that all students have the right to obtain an education in a safe
environment. The school has established rules and practices to ensure this occurs for each child. It is expected that all students will be honest, courteous, know and obey the rules of the school, and cooperate with the school staff. Workman School rules provide students with a general framework for good decision making in all school settings. Whether in the classroom, in the cafeteria, on the playground, at the bus stop, or elsewhere in or about the school, these basic rules apply. We provide children the opportunity to manage their behavior and support them while they learn the skills necessary to resolve conflicts and minor problems that occur with other students.
Students will be notified and reminded throughout the year of the school’s rules and expectations for treating other students well, for safety, and for Conflict Resolution.
- Students should not arrive at school until 8:40 a.m. They should go directly to line up by the locationsdesignated for their classrooms.
- Electronic devices are not allowed at school (i.e., Ipods,hand held games, etc.) unless permission is received from the school.
- We expect students to use appropriate language at all times.
- Skateboards, roller blades or shoes with built-in wheels are not allowed for use during the school day.
- Play in areas assigned for your grade level. Other parts of the playground are available only when students from other grades are not outside.
- Use equipment in a safe manner.
- Try to handle problems yourself before you ask an adult for help.
- Make sure you are dressed properly for the weather
- Games using school balls and equipment or those brought from home must include all classmates.
- You must have permission from an adult before returning to the building.
- Appropriate language and treatment of other students are expected at all times.
- Treating other students in a way that could be hurtful is not allowed at anytime on the playground.
RULES FOR INDOOR RECESS
- Appropriate games and activities for students during inside recesses are provided in each classroom.

RULES FOR SCHOOL BUS RIDERS
While waiting for the bus after school, students are expected to:
- Come and sit in your bus line as soon as you arrive at the gym.
- Stay seated unless you have permission from the safeties or an adult to leave your line.
- Look for ways to be helpful to younger brothers and sisters and neighborhood children riding on the same bus.
At the bus stop, students are expected to:
- Be at their designated bus stop on time, not more than five minutes before the scheduled bus arrival time.
- Be respectful of lawn, bushes, and flowers of the neighbors at the bus stop.
- Make the same good choices at the bus stop that they make at school.
When riding on the bus, students are expected to:
- Remain seated while the bus is in motion.
- Follow all rules and directions of the bus driver.
- Make sure behavior does not distract the driver from driving the bus safely.
- Refrain from eating on the bus.
Students who choose not to follow bus rules or obey the driver can be subject to the bus referral process and may be suspended from riding the bus. Balls are not allowed on the bus unless they fit into a back pack or sport bag.
NOTE: The school office must be notified in writing if your child is going home with another student.
RULES FOR SAFE WALKING
- Cross only at corners and crosswalks
- Obey adult crossing guards
- Remain on the sidewalk at all times.
RULES FOR SAFE BICYCLE RIDING
- There are no age limits for students who want to ride their bikes to school.
- Students should only ride on sidewalks.
- Students are not to ride their bikes on school property or in the park by the school.
- A bike rack is provided by the front door. Bikes should be locked at all times.
It is essential that our children be provided a safe, orderly and fear-free environment in which to learn, and we know that when good behavior and good instruction are combined, our students will excel in their learning. With
that in mind, all of our elementary schools will be stressing the following positive behaviors:
- Be responsible, for example, follow adult directions promptly.
- Be respectful, for example, treat others as you wish to be treated.
- Be safe, for example, keep hands, feet and objects to self.
- Demonstrate perseverance, for example, complete assigned tasks even when they are difficult.
While we realize that most students make responsible choices about their behavior each day at school, we realize that does not happen all the time. When those times occur that students do not, we try to provide an opportunity so each circumstance can be a learning opportunity for the child. A mistake is a chance to take responsibility for that action, “fix” the problem with the person or people affected by that decision, and explore some ways that situation could be handled differently the next time. There are times that a consequence will need to occur when a poor choice has been made. For minor infractions, possible consequences could include but are not limited to the following:
- a note written by the child and signed by a parent.
- loss of a recess privileges.
- a phone call home.
- a meeting with the student and the Principal.
For major infractions such as fighting, vandalism, acting in a disrespectful manner toward an adult, use of inappropriate language, or when patterns of misbehavior have been identified, the following will occur:
All major infractions will be handled by the Principal. These inappropriate behavior choices will at the outset be handled in the same way that minor mistakes are handled, as a learning opportunity. Possible consequences for major infractions could include:
- loss of recess privileges for an extended period of time.
- development of a plan to “fix” the mistake by a repair, cleaning, or meeting with the other person involved.
- a meeting with the student and his or her parents
- suspension from school.
- contact with officers from the police or fire department.
Parents will be notified of all major infractions that occur in school.
CODE OF CONDUCT

One important characteristic of an effective school is a safe and orderly environment. Plymouth-Canton Community Schools is continually striving to provide for the health, safety and security of each student. Parent/guardian awareness and support of the following principles, guidelines and consequences will assist each student in learning appropriate attitudes and behaviors. Every student is expected to support the rules of conduct at each school which contribute to the safety of others and provide for maximum learning opportunities.
Student Conduct Principles: (Excerpted from Core Democratic Values from the Michigan Department of Education Content Standards)

It is the philosophy of Plymouth-Canton Community Schools that all individuals should be treated with dignity and respect. –Board Policy 5517
Parents/guardians could discuss how these principles allow for both freedom and responsibility within our daily lives.
Bullying Behavior: This includes any written or verbal expression, or physical act or gesture, or a pattern thereof, that is intended to cause distress upon one or more students in the school, on school grounds, to and from school, at school activities or sanctioned events is strictly forbidden. All students must be treated with dignity and respect.
Bus Behavior: Riding the bus is a privilege. Students are expected to follow all bus rules for safety reasons or could lose bus privileges.
Disruptive Behavior: Any student’s behavior or action that disrupts the learning environment and/or negatively affects a safe and orderly environment will be subject to disciplinary action up to and including suspension or expulsion.
Drugs: Students are not to bring medication to school unless prescribed by a physician. At no time is the student to keep the medication in his/her possession or to share his/her medication with others. The use, possession or sale of illegal drugs will result in an automatic school suspension and involvement by local police authorities.
Fighting: Fighting (including: biting, spitting, grabbing, pushing, kicking and hitting) is not allowed. Students who choose fighting as a means of handling disagreements will be counseled and/or be subjected to disciplinary action up to and including suspension or expulsion. Parental support of this rule is expected to insure the safety and well being of all students.
Harassment: To provide a physically and psychologically safe learning environment, harassment will not be tolerated. Harassment includes sexual harassment as well as the use of racial, ethnic, gender, disability, height, weight, etc., or other verbal or physical harassment. Anyone violating this policy will be subject to disciplinary action up to and including suspension or expulsion from the District. Such behavior may also be in violation of Federal and State Law. If a student believes he/she is being harassed, he/she should contact the building Principal immediately.
Matches / Fires: Students having matches, lighters, etc. will have them confiscated and parents will be contacted and informed. Lighting matches, smoking, starting a fire on school premises or pulling a fire alarm will warrant an automatic school suspension.
Playground: Every student is expected to follow the safety rules on the playground. All pieces of equipment are designed for pleasure, muscle coordination and development. If misused, equipment may cause bodily harm to self and others.
Threatening Comments: If harassing or threatening remarks are made and/or heard, which reflect potential violence (i.e. kill, murder, shoot, stab, etc.) the school resource officer or police will be contacted and a risk assessment and interview will be completed. Anyone violating this policy will be subjected to disciplinary action up to and including suspension or expulsion from the District.
Weapons: Every student must respect the physical well being of others. Weapons of any kind are not allowed on school property or on school buses. A new Michigan law requires the school board to expel a student if the student is discovered to have been in the unlawful possession of a firearm, or in possession of another dangerous weapon while on school premises or at a school-related activity. Dangerous weapons include a firearm, dagger, dirk, stiletto, and knife with a blade over three inches in length, pocketknife opened by a mechanical device, iron bar or brass knuckles.
NEGLECT OR ABUSE OF CHILDREN
Michigan law requires any staff member having reasonable cause to suspect that a student has been physically or emotionally abused or neglected to immediately report this to the Department of Social services. In addition, parents may report any suspected neglect or abuse they feel may be happening to a child in the neighborhood by calling the Family Independence Agency at (313) 396-0300. All referrals are handled confidentially.
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) affords parents and students over 18 year of age certain rights with respect to the student’s education records, the right to request amendment to the student’s education records, and the right to consent to the disclosure of personally identifiable information contained in the student’s records. Parents or legal guardians who want to review their student’s education records should submit a written request to the school principal that identifies the record(s) they wish to inspect.
State of Michigan law requires children to have certain immunizations before they attend school. These laws are designed to protect the health of all children in our schools. You must present written evidence that your child has received the required immunizations listed below:
- DPT (Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis) 4 doses are required. If a dose was not given on or after 4th birthday, a booster dose of DPT is required. Most children will have 5 doses.
- Polio—3 doses are required. If the last dose was not given on or after the 4th birthday, a booster dose is required. Most children will have 4 doses.
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) - 2 doses are required. The 1st dose must be given on or after the 1st birthday. The 2nd dose must be given at least 28 days from the 1st dose.
- Hepatitis B (Haemophilus Influenza—Type B) 3 doses are required.
- Varicella—1 dose required given on or after the first birthday. History of chicken pox disease documented by parent is acceptable.
These requirements can be waived only if a signed health, religious or personal conviction waiver is filed with the school. Information regarding waivers may be obtained through the school office.
When a student has head lice, all children from that same house should be inspected. Parents are encouraged to call the school office to inform if their child has head lice. Student can return to school after head lice treatment. See the head lice toolbox (link below) for the district head lice (pediculosis) guideline and information on head lice prevention, identification and management.
Each school has the services of a nurse on a part time basis. In addition, school personnel carefully treat any minor injury your child may receive while at school. You will be notified of injuries to your child which are of special concern to us, especially head injuries, even if they seem minor. If your child contracts a communicable disease, please notify the school office immediately. The school will work with you to plan for your child’s return to school.
Vision and hearing tests are given to students upon parent or teacher request. You will be notified if testing reveals potential problems
MEDICATION AT SCHOOL
In accordance with Section 178; Act No. 157 of the Public Acts of 1971, it is the adopted procedure of the Plymouth-Canton Community School District that under no circumstances shall any school employee attempt to suggest a medical diagnosis or prescribe or give MEDICATION OF ANY KIND, including aspirin. In order for medication to be given at school we need:
- A permission slip from parents AND a signed physician’s order indicating drug name, dose, time and method of administration, and duration of treatment must be provided to the school. It is also recommended that possible side effects of a medication be indicated on the permission slip.
- There will be no over-the-counter drugs dispensed without a written order by a physician.
- Medication must be labeled with a pharmacy logo. The label must indicate the child’s name.
ILLNESS-WHEN TO RETURN TO SCHOOL
Any child who has had a fever of 100 degrees or more should not return to school until 24 hours of normal temperature have passed. Active, heavy coughing with a runny nose and sneezing are symptoms that need a doctor’s evaluation. Allergy symptoms can be controlled with medications. A child with a cold needs additional rest and must remain home until symptoms have diminished.
Any child who vomits should not return to school until 24 hours have passed with no vomiting.
Diarrhea may be difficult for a child to manage in school and may be a symptom of a contagious disease. Diarrhea can also be very upsetting to a child. Treatment requires diet modification, rest and fluids, which can be better managed at home.
Any child who runs a fever of 100 degrees or more or presents signs of a contagious disease will be sent home from school. It is the parent’s responsibility to provide transportation and care for the child. Please keep your emergency phone number up-to-date and provide us with SEVERAL names and numbers of people who can care for your child if you are unavailable.
If your child has pink eye, he or she can return to school 24 hours after the initial eye drop medication has been placed in their eye.
REPORT CARDS AND PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES
Parent-Teacher conferences are scheduled during early November. Parents/guardians are encouraged to participate in these conferences. If you would like to schedule additional conferences, call the school and arrangements will be made
Report cards are issued four times per year for children in grades 1-5. Students in kindergarten will receive a report card three times during the school year.
All students in the Plymouth-Canton Community Schools are taught the curriculum designed by the School District. Students in each classroom at each grade level across the District are learning the same content. This District curriculum has been built from the content standard and benchmarks developed by the State Department of Education for all Michigan children. Copies of the District’s curriculum overview are available in the school office or on the school website.
A child must be five (5) years old on or before November1 to enter kindergarten in 2013. The Plymouth-Canton Community School District conducts a kindergarten pre-registration each spring. Dates of the pre-registration period vary from year to year. Announcement of these dates appears in the local papers or may be obtained by calling the Board of Education office at 416-2700. The following should be brought when registering: the original birth certificate, social security number, immunization record, and proof of residency.
Students will then be invited to visit the kindergarten class for a one hour during the spring before Kindergarten begins, which we call "Visitation." The intent is to give the child a school experience to ease their transition from home to school. During this Visitation time, parents are invited to an orientation outlining the various aspects of the kindergarten program given by various members of the school staff.
ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS (ELL)
Trained ELL teachers provide additional academic support on a weekly basis to students throughout the district and schedule their time in a building according to the number of student needing ELL services.
Promotion is the action that advances a student from one grade to the next. Retention is the action that keeps a student in the same grade for another year and it gives the student the opportunity for an extra year of growth. When making recommendations about promotion or retention of students, the principal will consider the viewpoints of the parents and teachers. Parents are notified regarding the possibility of retention as soon as the teacher may consider such an action. The factors determining retention usually surface early into the second semester. The decision to promote or retain students always takes many factors into consideration and may include: student attendance, grades, daily work habits and achievement, social maturity, and student ability.
While the best decision about retention or promotion is one that parents and school people agree on, school district policy gives the Principal the right to make a final decision.
TALENTED AND GIFTED (TAG) PROGRAM
T. A. G. is a program for academically gifted students in the Plymouth-Canton Community Schools. The program begins in third grade for all students who qualify, however children can be screened any year through eighth grade.
Children nominated for the program must meet criteria established by the district on several screening components. The screening process begins in January of each year for entry the following school year. The elementary TAG classrooms are currently at Workman School and the school district provides bus transportation to and from each child’s “home” school for this full day magnet center program.

The Plymouth-Canton Schools have a Literacy Early Achievement Plan, also known as Project LEAP. This early intervention plan provides for trained paraprofessionals in every kindergarten classroom, a full time speech and language teacher in every building, and intervention teachers supporting language arts instruction in first grade classrooms for 30-45 minutes four days each week.
ART, MUSIC, PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND LIBRARY CLASSES
Students will attend each of these classes for one 45 minute period each week. These classes are taught by teachers that have specific training and certification in their specialty areas. Each class follows a district-wide curriculum specific for each grade level.
While in the Library, students will receive instruction in skills for using the Library as well as training for improving their use of computers along with the opportunity to check out materials on a weekly basis.
Michigan law (PA 25) requires that each school prepare an Annual Report to be shared with the public by September 30th of the following school year. The report is to include information on school improvement goals and activities, as well as student achievement data, such as MEAP scores.
Education YES! is the State of Michigan’s School Accreditation Program that began in January 2003. The State grades all Michigan’s schools annually based on a combination of factors, including MEAP performance and a school’s self-assessment on a comprehensive set of school performance indicators. The Education YES! Annual Report Card provides both a benchmark of current academic performance and serves as a guide to future school improvement.
Students are serviced by means of direct instruction and support through a variety of programs. Additional support services are available and include:

SPECIAL EDUCATION SERVICES
Pupil Personnel Services provides a wide variety of programs and services to children who have been identified as eligible for special education services. These programs and services are designed so that the students can develop to a realistic level of social and educational potential and include: appropriate facilities, specialized instructional materials and teaching methods, and teachers with specialized training.

All schools in Michigan are required to supply students with textbooks, workbooks, writing paper, one pencil per semester and crayons. Beyond these items, classroom teachers may make additional suggestions for supplies which they believe will help facilitate good organizational skills and work habits. Grade level lists of recommended supplies are published in June for the following year and are sent home to parents at the beginning of the school year.
Classes may take field trips to enrich the classroom experience. Prior to the event, each student must have a signed permission slip from a parent or guardian. You will be notified of trip details, including the amount of each student’s share of the cost. Since field trips are closely related to activities in the classroom, students are encouraged to participate. Please contact your child’s teacher if money might be a problem that would prevent him or her from being part of a field trip. Due to district budget shortfalls this year, classes will not be allowed to take field trips on school district buses. All field trips will need to be taken on private carriers and increase the cost for students.
DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD MEETINGS
The District School Board meetings are scheduled on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday evening of each month at 7:00 PM at the Plymouth-Canton School Administration Building located at 454 S. Harvey Street or at designated locations throughout the District (i.e. school buildings).
Members of the Workman PTO Council are volunteers who are actively involved in school activities and projects. All Workman School parents are encouraged to participate.
The goal of the Council is to support our students, classroom teaching and learning, and to provide family activities that promote a strong school community.
There are no officers for the Council except the Treasurer. The Council mainly consists of parents who have volunteered to be a chairperson for a particular project or activity that interests them. Decisions are made at monthly Council meetings by committee chairs and other Workman parents who choose to attend.
Working together is key to enhancing your child’s school experience and whether you work outside the home or a stay-at-home parent, you can become an active member. We will be happy to have your help with any small or large project that might be of interest to you.
