According to Michigan Law, if a child residing in Plymouth-Canton Community Schools is not five years of age on September 1, 2018, but will be five years of age not later than December 1, 2018, the parent or legal guardian of that child may enroll the child in Kindergarten for the 2018-2019 school year if the parent or legal guardian completes the Kindergarten Waiver Request form.  Registrations must be completed by a birth parent or legal guardian.

Informational Meetings for the Young 5’s program will be held on Monday, February 12, 2018 at 10 AM and Monday, February 12, 2018 at 6:30 PM.  These meetings will take place at Hoben Elementary School which is located at 44680 Saltz Rd., Canton.  At the informational meeting, you will learn more about the program. Families have the opportunity to select their preferred location  on the Young 5’s Placement Form.  In the event that there are more requests than available space at a specific location, a lottery system will be used to determine placements in each of the Young 5’s programs.  Only those students who have completed registrations on file by March 2, 2018 will be included in the lottery which will  determine preferred placements. Students registering after March 2, 2018  will be placed in an available classroom on a first come first serve basis. Peggy Kaczmarek  and the Early Childhood/Extended Day office will organize the placement of students in the program. Class offerings will be determined by enrollment in each program. Parents will be notified by email regarding placement in the Young 5’s program.

The Young 5’s classroom is a print rich environment with a focus on speaking and listening experiences, letter identification,  and sound and letter formation. The Young 5’s classroom includes experiences to support key literacy foundation in a sensory-based approach. Kindergarten classrooms offer curriculum based on the Michigan Academic Standards.  Kindergarten experiences are designed to  support the physical, social-emotional and cognitive development of children.  The kindergarten curriculum includes the Reader’s Workshop Framework and builds on early literacy foundations for reading and writing.  The EveryDay Math program is used with an extended focus on numeracy concepts.  Science and Social Studies experiences build the foundation for collaborative learning with peers and expand problem solving skills.

Where is the program located?
Each year the program is located based in multiple buildings. This school year (2017-2018)  the programs are located at Eriksson, Farrand, Hoben, Hulsing, Field  and Isbister Elementary Schools.  Families drive their children to and from school.
