Plymouth-Canton Community Schools Young 5’s Kindergarten Program Q & A

What is the Young 5’s Kindergarten Program?

The Young 5’s Kindergarten Program offers a developmentally appropriate curriculum designed to meet the needs of a child who may need one more year of social, emotional or academic development.

How does a child qualify for the program?

Children who will turn five between June 1, 2017 and September 1, 2017 can qualify for this program. According to current Michigan Law, if a child residing in Plymouth-Canton Community Schools (P-CCS) is not five years of age on September 1, 2017, but will be five years of age not later than December 1, 2017, the parent or legal guardian of that child may enroll the child in Kindergarten for the 2017-2018 school year if the parent or legal guardian completes the Kindergarten Waiver Request form. Registrations must be completed by a birth parent or legal guardian.

What instructional materials are used in the program?

The Zoo Phonics program is used to teach letter identification, sounds and letter formation. Everyday Mathematics is our Math program. The students participate in a hands-on Science program. Social Studies focuses on the young learner at our school and in our community.

Where is the program located in the current school year (2016-2017)?

This school year the programs are located at Eriksson, Farrand, Hoben, Hulsing and Isbister Elementary Schools.  Families drive their children to and from school.

How do I register my child for the program?

You can register your child at your “home school” during the week of Kindergarten registration, which will be the week of February 27, 2017.  Parents should indicate to the school secretary that they are interested in the Young 5’s kindergarten program.

Where will the program be located in the 2017-2018 school year?

P-CCS would like to place the program at different locations throughout the school district. The placement of the program will be based on the space available at our elementary schools. In the current school year, the program is located at Eriksson, Farrand, Hulsing, Hoben and Isbister Elementary Schools, but placement of the program for the 2017-2018 year may change.

Will there be full-day and half-day options for the Young 5’s Program?

How do students in the Young 5's program get to and from school?

Families provide transportation to and from the program.

Is there a fee for the program?

No, the Plymouth-Canton Community School district receives per pupil state funding for the program.

If my child attends Young 5’s Program, would he or she have to attend Kindergarten the following year?  Could my child be recommended for 1st grade if ready?

Since Young 5’s is a Kindergarten program, children that are ready academically, socially and emotionally can attend first grade the following school year. The classroom teacher will work with the families to determine if the child should be placed in Kindergarten or first grade.
