Young 5s (Y5s)
In some cases, parents may believe that their child would benefit from early entrance into kindergarten. Young 5s is an option available to families considering early entrance; however, this decision should be in cooperation with the school.
According to Michigan Law, if a child residing in Plymouth-Canton Community Schools is not five years of age on September 1, but will be five years of age not later than December 1, the parent or legal guardian of that child may contact the school principal to discuss enrolling the child in Kindergarten for the next school year. This early entrance requires that the parent complete a waiver.
Registration for Young 5s Kindergarten will be held during the weeks of March 2 to 6, 2020, at your home school. Parents should indicate to the school secretary that they are enrolling for the Kindergarten Young 5s program. In addition to the online registration, those enrolling in the Young 5s Kindergarten must also complete a The Young 5s Kindergarten Placement Form (Google doc). This form can also be obtained from your home school office.
Determining placement in Young 5’s Kindergarten Classes:
A lottery system will be used to determine placements in the Young 5s classrooms. A lottery system will also be used if the school district receives more Y5s kindergarten registrations than spaces available for the designated Young 5s classrooms. Only those students who have completed the entire registration process and meet age eligibility (including the Y5s registration form) by March 6, 2020, will be included in the initial lottery to determine placement. Proposed locations for the coming school year will be listed on The Young 5s Kindergarten Placement Form (Google doc) which is completed during the registration process. Parents/guardians will have an opportunity to select their 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choice locations. Only some schools have a Young 5s Kindergarten classroom.
Families interested in enrolling their child in a Young 5s classroom are responsible for transporting their child to and from the Young 5s classroom determined for their child. Proposed locations for the Young 5s classrooms are subject to change prior to the beginning of the school year.
Parents/guardians will be notified by email in early May regarding placement in the Young 5s program.
Young 5s Kindergarten:
Young 5s Kindergarten classrooms offer curriculum based on the Michigan Academic Standards. Kindergarten experiences are designed to support the physical, social-emotional and cognitive development of young children. The Y5s Kindergarten curriculum includes the foundations of the Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop Framework and builds on early language skills moving toward written literacy as the year progresses. A focus on basic literacy foundations for reading and writing are at the heart of the Young 5s classroom. A primary focus on numeracy concepts and problem solving takes place through the use of manipulatives and various opportunities to represent thinking. Experiences to support physical and social emotional learning are included throughout the day with a focus on small and large muscle coordination, taking turns, identifying personal needs and problem solving. Science and Social Studies experiences build the foundation for collaborative learning through interest based experiences.
