Below is the official transcript of the call from P-CCS Superintendent of School, Monica Merritt, on Friday evening (March 20, 2020):

Good evening Plymouth-Canton Community Schools families and students, this is Superintendent Monica Merritt. I hope you are all taking care of yourselves and your families during this unprecedented time in our community. I’m calling you tonight with some important updates, as we reach the end of our first week of school closures.

Let me start by saying that we miss our students every day, and we are looking forward to the opportunity to be with them again. While we cannot be with our students in person, we have relentlessly been working to provide opportunities that will allow our amazing teachers to engage remotely with our incredible students, and make sure that ALL of our students are equipped with what they need as we move forward as a district and community.

I am so proud to share that we successfully distributed 30,000 meals for our community this past week, and I am incredibly grateful for our staff volunteers that came together to make this happen. We are P-CCS Strong. We will continue to provide our food distribution program every Wednesday during the school closure period. For a list of locations, visit the district website at pccsk12.com.

We also want to share some important updates regarding our plans for providing remote learning opportunities for students. As was confirmed today by the Michigan Department of Education, any online instruction that we choose to provide cannot be counted towards instructional time. What we have continued to work on is planning non-mandatory opportunities to keep students engaged and involved in learning. This, combined with opportunities to stay connected with their teachers through remote platforms, should bring a helpful sense of connection and calm to our students and families during this school closure.

Beginning next week, we will enter the next phase of our Home Learning Resources plan, and teachers will begin engaging in remote communications with students. More information on this will be communicated in the coming days.

Although any activities that we share are not graded and will not be mandatory, learning will continue at P-CCS.

These are challenging and uncertain times, and I am confident that we will get through this together as a school community. Things are changing so rapidly and information is fluid, but we will continue to keep you informed as latest developments are made known to us. Keep your focus on taking care of yourselves, your families, and each other, so our students are best prepared to return to school ready to LEARN, PREPARE, and THRIVE.

Have a safe and healthy weekend!
