Dr. Monica L. Merritt has served as the 14th Superintendent of Plymouth-Canton Community Schools (P-CCS) since December 2015, bringing passion, experience, and a student-centered approach to her leadership. Recognized as the 2023 Michigan Superintendent of the Year by the Michigan Association of Superintendents & Administrators (MASA), Dr. Merritt is celebrated for her commitment to fostering innovative, equitable, and high-quality educational experiences for all students.
A proud resident and parent in the P-CCS community, Dr. Merritt brings both professional expertise and personal dedication to her role. She holds a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Michigan State University, which she earned in 2022, further enhancing her ability to drive systemic improvements and transformative initiatives within the district.
An Inspiring Journey in Education
Dr. Merritt’s career in education began in the classroom as a high school English teacher after earning her B.A. in English and M.A. in Teaching from Virginia Commonwealth University. Her leadership abilities quickly propelled her into administrative roles, serving as Assistant Principal at Ypsilanti High School and later as Principal of West Middle School in Ypsilanti.
In 2010, she transitioned to district-level leadership as Executive Director of Human Resources before joining P-CCS in 2011 as Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources and Labor Relations. In this role, she contributed to the Superintendent’s CORE Leadership Team and served as Administrative Chair for the Board of Education Policy Subcommittee. Her leadership and vision culminated in her appointment as Superintendent in 2015.

Dr. Merritt is known for her strategic leadership, innovative problem-solving, and unwavering dedication to student success. Her work focuses on creating inclusive learning environments, cultivating future leaders, and ensuring that every student has the tools and opportunities to succeed. She is a dynamic communicator who fosters strong relationships with staff, families, and community stakeholders, building a culture of collaboration and trust across the district.
A Legacy of Leadership
Dr. Merritt’s commitment to leadership and community is deeply personal. She is the daughter of Carol and Herman Boone, the iconic football coach whose story of uniting a team amidst racial tensions at T.C. Williams High School was immortalized in the Disney film Remember the Titans. His legacy of resilience, unity, and leadership continues to inspire her approach to education and community building.
Dr. Merritt resides in Plymouth Township with her husband, Darron, and their children, Mackenzie and Myles. Outside of her professional life, she enjoys spending time with family, traveling, boating, attending concerts, and, as a former English teacher, diving into a good book.
Through her visionary leadership, Dr. Merritt is shaping the future of education at P-CCS—empowering students, supporting educators, and building a stronger community for all.
