Celebrating our Students and Staff
Dear Plymouth-Canton Community Schools Families,
As we head into the home stretch of the 2024-25 school year, it’s hard to believe how quickly time has flown!
I want to take this opportunity to express my deep gratitude for everything you do to support our students and learning community, allowing our district to continue providing a world-class education. I would also like to highlight a few notable accomplishments so far this year, including:
- The Plymouth-Canton Education Park (P-CEP) Culinary Arts team once again took top honors at the statewide Michigan ProStart competition in Battle Creek. After two days of showcasing their talents in food and hospitality arts, P-CEP students earned the top prize in the culinary competition, second place in the management competition, and third in the ServSafe Knowledge Bowl. Congratulations to our students and staff, including lead instructor Chef Diana Woodward.
- This past weekend, the P-CCS Lightning Robotics team, led by Jay Obsniuk, Lead Teacher of FIRST Team 862, won their district competition. Lightning Robotics also received the FIRST Impact Award, the highest award a team can receive at a FIRST Robotics competition, in honor of the team that represents a model for other teams to emulate in transforming the culture in ways that will inspire greater levels of respect for science and technology. The P-CCS team qualifies for the statewide competition in April. Well done, Lightning Robotics!
- Congratulations to the 22 P-CEP students who were named finalists in the annual National Merit Scholarship Competition. This is the largest group of finalists I can remember during my time in the district! These students placed among the top 1% of all scorers nationwide on the PSAT exam and were then evaluated based on their coursework and grades. This achievement reflects our commitment to providing a top-notch education that prepares students to excel and succeed beyond high school. Winners will be announced later this year.
- Plymouth-Canton Community Schools recently received a $200,000 state grant to give our teachers the chance to experience a place-based professional learning program. Teachers will visit metro Detroit museums, institutions and houses of worship that reflect the histories and experiences of multicultural communities in the region. Last month, they visited The Zekelman Holocaust Center in Farmington Hills. They are scheduled to visit Temple Israel this month. In October, P-CCS teachers visited the Arab American National Museum and the Islamic Center of America in Dearborn. Our teachers will be visiting many other locations in the coming months, including the Plymouth Historical Museum, the Charles Wright Museum of African American History, the Henry Ford Museum and the Detroit Institute of Art, the Basilica of St. Anne in Detroit, the Gurdwara Singh Saba of Michigan in Canton, the Hindu Temple of Canton and the Midwest Buddhist Meditation Center in Warren.
- Congratulations to Canton High School seniors Sarah Moore and Dana Sassine. Under the guidance of Olivia Foster, they placed in the Top 20 of the New York Times international short memoir contest. The contest received more than 12,000 applications from across the globe! Sarah and Dana’s 100-word memoirs are respectively titled, “A Letter to My Biological Mother,” and “Wearing My Truth.” You can read their entries at the New York Times. Madeline Lenk of Canton High School, Patrick Ward of Plymouth High School and Ye Won Paek of Plymouth High School were selected among the 120 finalists in the Times competition.
These are only a few of the accomplishments our scholarly students and amazing staff achieve every day. We are grateful to you for being such an integral part of the success of our school community. Together, we will continue providing the exceptional education our community expects from us and that our students deserve.
As we celebrate our current students' successes, we also look forward to welcoming our newest learners! Kindergarten Orientation is coming up on May 13, and we are excited to introduce the Class of 2038 to all that P-CCS has to offer. Registration for Kindergarten and Young 5s is now open—visit pccsk12.com/enrollment for more information.
Enjoy the rest of your week, and have a wonderful, relaxing Spring Break!
Yours in Learning,
Dr. Monica L. Merritt
