Plymouth-Canton Community Schools Globally Focused. Locally Connected.

Message from Canton Police Department:

There have been many questions recently about E-Bike laws as the weather improves and temperatures rise.

Under Michigan law (Public Act 138 of 2017, which amended the Michigan Vehicle Code), electric bicycles are classified into three categories.

Please see the attached flyer for further information.

There have been many questions recently about E-Bike laws amid the weather.

Infographic showing the different classifications of e-bikes

Class 1 E-Bikes: Pedal-assist only, up to 20 MPH

Class 2 E-Bikes: Throttle-assisted, up to 20 MPH

Class 3 E-Bikes: Pedal-assist only, up to 28 MPH

Class 1 & 2 e-bikes may be operated on sidewalks unless restricted by a local ordinance.

Class 3 e-bikes are prohibited on sidewalks and are intended for roadway or designated bike lane use only.
