In some cases, parents may believe that their child would benefit from early entrance into kindergarten.
The Young 5s Kindergarten classroom experiences are designed to support the physical, social-emotional and cognitive development of young children. The curriculum is based on the Michigan Academic Standards which include the Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop Framework focusing on basic literary skills of reading and writing. The Y5sK classroom further incorporates numeracy concepts and problem solving tasks through the use of manipulatives. Collaborative learning experiences include interest based experiences, taking turns, and identifying personal needs.
Enrollment for Young 5s Kindergarten
Children who will be five years old between June 1st and September 1st (or those who have completed a Kindergarten Waiver (see below) are eligible for Young 5s Kindergarten.
When enrolling for Kindergarten, the Parent or Guardian should inform the secretary of the intent to enroll for Young 5s Kindergarten. They will be given a Young 5s Kindergarten Placement Form (PDF) to complete. This form provides choices for classroom sites. Parents/guardians will have an opportunity to select their first, second and third choice locations. Only some schools have a Young 5s Kindergarten classroom.
Parent or guardian will be notified of placement by email in early May.
Determining eligibility and classroom placement in Young 5s Kindergarten Classes:
In the event that we have more students than we have spaces, a lottery system is used to determine student placement (and location).
Only those students that are completely enrolled in P-CCS and meet the age eligibility by March 6, 2020 will be included in this lottery. Students enrolling in Y5sK after March 6, 2020 will be placed according to available space.
Families are responsible for transportation to the school site (building locations are subject to change prior to the beginning of the school year).
Kindergarten Waiver: According to Michigan Law, if a child residing in Plymouth-Canton Community Schools is not five years of age on September 1, but will be five years of age not later than December 1, the parent or legal guardian of that child may contact the school principal to discuss enrolling the child in Kindergarten for the next school year. This early entrance requires that the parent complete a waiver. Kindergarten Waiver Request (PDF)
